Microneedling vs. Facial Acupuncture: What’s the Difference?

What’s the difference between microneedling and facial acupuncture?

Both treatments can support healthier, more radiant-looking skin, but they approach rejuvenation in very different ways.

The simplest way to think about it is:

Microneedling works more directly on the skin from the outside in. Facial acupuncture takes a whole-body approach, working from the inside out.

Microneedling: Direct Collagen Stimulation

Microneedling is a more invasive treatment than facial acupuncture. At Kayco Wellness, we use the Dermapen 4, an FDA-cleared professional microneedling device. During the treatment, controlled microchannels are created in the skin to trigger the body's natural repair and collagen-building response.

Because the treatment works directly within the skin, it provides a more intensive stimulus for collagen and elastin production.

Microneedling can be particularly helpful for:

  • Deep acne scarring

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Enlarged pores

  • Uneven skin texture

  • Congestion

  • Loss of firmness and elasticity

  • Certain scars and textural irregularities

Because microneedling intentionally creates controlled micro-injuries, it is normal for the skin to look red and similar to a sunburn for approximately 24–48 hours following treatment.

For best results and maximum collagen stimulation, a minimum of three treatments is recommended, typically spaced 4–6 weeks apart.

Facial Acupuncture: A Facial From the Inside Out

Facial acupuncture takes a very different approach.

Rather than focusing exclusively on the external skin, facial acupuncture combines facial and body acupuncture to support the skin while also considering the body as a whole.

Fine acupuncture needles are placed at specific points on the face and throughout the body based on your individual concerns and treatment goals.

One of the key focuses is supporting healthy circulation to the skin. Increased local blood flow can support the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and promote overall skin vitality and hydration.

This is why we often describe facial acupuncture as a facial from the inside out.

Facial acupuncture can be especially beneficial for:

  • Active acne and congestion

  • Dull or tired-looking skin

  • Facial tension

  • TMJ and jaw tension

  • Headaches

  • Puffiness

  • Inflammation

  • Stress and relaxation

  • Overall skin health

At Kayco, your treatment also includes gentle facial cupping and Celluma LED therapy, adding another layer of circulation, lymphatic support and skin-focused care.

So Which One Is Right for You?

This is where the difference becomes especially important.

If you have active or cystic acne, facial acupuncture may be a great place to start. Rather than focusing solely on the marks left behind by acne, we can take a whole-body approach and consider factors that may be contributing to your flare-ups, while supporting circulation, inflammation and overall skin health.

Once active acne is more settled, microneedling can be an excellent option for the marks it has left behind, particularly hyperpigmentation, acne scarring and uneven texture.

If your main concern is deep fine lines or wrinkles, microneedling may be the better choice. Because it creates a direct and intensive stimulus for collagen production, it can provide more targeted treatment for visible signs of aging.

Similarly, if you have significant skin texture, enlarged pores or congestion, microneedling may be more effective at directly resurfacing and refining the skin.

Facial acupuncture, on the other hand, really shines when you're looking for gradual rejuvenation alongside treatment of facial tension, TMJ, headaches, active acne, dull skin or stress.

Can You Have Both?

Absolutely.

Because they work differently, microneedling and facial acupuncture can complement each other beautifully. One provides a more direct stimulus to the skin's collagen-building process, while the other takes a broader approach to circulation, skin health and the body as a whole.

At Kayco Wellness, we don't believe that one treatment is universally better than the other. The best treatment depends on what your skin is experiencing right now and what you want to achieve.

If you're unsure which treatment is right for you, send us a message. We're happy to talk through your skin concerns and help you determine where to start.
